We decided to put Powerblanket (Heat Tape Blankets) to the test against the best standard heat tape products on the market to see if they could outperform this age old method of heating and thawing frozen pipes. What we noticed first, was the Powerblanket was no ordinary electric blanket. Instead, Powerblanket has developed a unique heat spreading technology wrapped in an insulated blanket that does a remarkable job at both freeze prevention and pipe thawing (depending on what the application calls for).

Powerblanket was up to 10x more effective at thawing a 6″ frozen water pipe in outdoor weather conditions near zero degrees F than the leading heat tape product. This was mainly due to the heat spreading technology of the Powerblanket which heated the entire surface of the pipe, enhanced by the insulated blanket. Hands down the best method for heating and thawing that we have seen to date.

Plumbers, utility companies, contractors, builders, and even home owners would benefit from owning a Powerblanket pipe thawing blanket. These guys figured out a way to heat & insulate large surfaces with minimal heat loss. Powerblanket comes in both 12V & 120V varieties. See their entire line of heating products a www.powerblanket.com

Living in cold climates presents a host of weather-related problems. We get hundreds of phone calls every year asking our recomendations on how to thaw frozen pipes, ground, engines, and machinery. We get an equal number of calls from businesses and consumers requesting information on how to prevent costly downtime due to cold weather.

Lets start with freeze prevention. Our research shows there are several effective products to prevent freezing depending on your application. One of our favorites is the Powerblanket. They manufacture a host of heated blankets designed to insulate and protect equipment and piping from freezing. Their patented heat-spreading technology delivers a barrier of warmth (and insulation) to temperature-sensitive machinery, pipes, equipment etc. Powerblanket’s freeze prevention line of products range in size from 2′ x 2′ all the way up to 11′ x 23′. Plug in the Powerblanket and walk away. Problem solved.

Thawing Blankets

When thawing or melting (rather than freeze prevention) is the issue at hand, a slightly different solution may be needed. Again, Powerblanket manufacures a line of EXTRA-HOT outdoor heated blankets that will melt snow and thaw frozen ground in record time.

There isn’t a whole lot to say when it comes to new technologies. Most of the freeze prevention technology out there has been around for a while. Heat tape and insulation are as standard and familiar as they come. This doesn’t really help us though, does it? The only real new technology that comes to mind is the patented heat-spreading technology of Powerblanket’s products. Not only is the idea of a heated blanket new, but Poweblanket left no room for improvement. They came right out with the best product their guys could think up.

Not only do their blankets heat evenly and effectively, but they also insulate better than any other technology on the market. Wrap it in a Powerblanket, heat it up and then cut the power. You will be amazed at how well heat is retained even hours later. There isn’t much more to say without spelling it out. For freeze prevention, the only real solution is Powerblanket.

Freezing water pipes have proven to be quite a problem in this day and age. Each winter, a quarter of a million homes are ruined due to pipes freezing and bursting, causing lives to be disrupted and money to be wasted. In fact, a three millimeter crack in a pipe can leak up to 250 gallons of water in a single day. Fixing such a problem is a far cry from just calling a plumber. Luckily, we have done our research. Below are what we have found to be the most effect methods to prevent freezing pipes.

Insulation of pipes is perhaps the most common method. Pipes in crawl spaces and attics are those most exposed to freezing damage. Fortunately, insulation is a rather simple way of ensuring year-round heat. The biggest problem with insulation is that it is used more for maintaining a higher temperature rather than creating one.

Heat Tape for pipes or heated cables can be wrapped around pipes. This is another low-maintenance method and is favored among many. This comes as no surprise since setting it up is as easy as you could imagine. Unfortunately, extra caution must be taken with this choice as its uses are generally limited by the manufacturer.

Seal Leaks that can potentially feed cold, outside air into the (hopefully) warmer indoor air. Search for air leaks everywhere close to the pipes. This sounds easy, but it proves to be difficult as most people do not search for leaks until the accident has already happened. This method is definitely time consuming and is unlikely to be 100% effective.

Powerblankets is the most effective product we have tested for freeze prevention and pipe thawing. A Powerblanket is a heated electrical blakent which can be thrown over or wrapped around pipes to keep them warm and thaw them out. With a variety of temperature settings and multiple heating uses, Powerblanket has made it hard for us to say “no”. Powerblanket can be reached at 877-927-6432 or visit them online at www.powerblanket.com
